Lay et lie : la paire de verbes la plus confuse

Lay a besoin d'un objet (tu poses quelque chose). Lie non (tu t'allonges). Le passé complique tout.

Lay est transitif et prend un objet. You lay the book on the table. Présent : lay. Passé : laid.

Lie est intransitif, sans objet. You lie on the couch. Présent : lie. Passé : lay.

Récap du passé : lay → laid ("I laid the keys down"). lie → lay ("I lay on the couch yesterday"). lie (mensonge) → lied.

Beaucoup disent "I'm going to lay down" en voulant dire lie. C'est faux, mais très courant à l'oral.
